Malik Thomas worked with the National Football Museum to produce illustrations highlighting some of the personal stories that surround football and the First World War.
Each image highlights lesser-known facts about the individual’s background in football and their efforts in the war.
The works were produced in stages, beginning with an artist residency at the museum, followed by a series of site visits.
Ideas developed in the artist’s sketchbook (on display below) feed into the final illustrations, which are created digitally to enable a high level of detail.
Walter Tull was the first black outfield player in the history of the English top division. This image aims to convey elements of his life: from growing up in an orphanage and playing for Tottenham, to eventually becoming the first black officer in the British Army and serving in the Battle of the Somme.
