nspired by the dark, whimsical undertones of Mozart’s 18th Century masterpiece “The Magic Flute”, Mimi Plange Fall/Winter 2010 is an exploration of opulence, mystery, and deep intrigue. Entitled “The Queen of the Night”, this season recalls the piece’s contrast of dark and light through deception and humor, reinterpreted in a rich color palette of ebony, cream, and splashes of crimson.
Drawing upon modern geometric shapes and classic draping, Mimi Plange Fall/Winter 2010 incorporates intricate detailing and meticulous construction- breathtaking embroideries of gardens, roses, scrolls, and rose bead appliqué details.
“I imagined my own Victorian spin of the temples and Egyptian fairytale land. I wanted to create wearable art that was both modern and wearable.”
Throughout the collection, there is a reference to the play’s symbolism, notably in the appearance of the number three- three embroideries, three panels, three fabrications, and the three sided triangle.
This season, Mimi Plange combines exotic materials (snakeskin, corked leather) with a range of sustainable and organic options- ranging from organic merino wool, organic hemp silk, and organic cotton spandex blends.
Mimi Plange has emerged as a distinct voice in fashion, incorporating an opulent, theatrical aesthetic- a reinterpretation of Parisian mise-en-scene in the vein of Galliano and Chanel. This season is no exception, incorporating live performance from a member of the New York City Opera.
