Words only have meaning if they’re understandable. When a man in an African village opens a Bible to read it for the first time, he stands on decades of work done by dedicated translators. Unfortunately, roughly 200 million people still do not have any Scripture in their own language.
Education is one of the most powerful tools for empowering people to live more fulfilled lives and, ultimately, to live up to their potential as followers of Christ. A child — or an adult — with an education is far more likely to escape poverty, avoid exploitation, and improve her health.
In many places, what stands between youth and the gospel is a shield of post-modern skepticism. In others, it is a wall of cultural and national opposition to Christianity. But there are few barriers a soccer ball cannot breach.
“Charity is no substitute for justice withheld,” Saint Augustine once said. At TEAM, we are called to actively restore the dignity lost through the corruption of sin and to break the cycles that keep the vulnerable oppressed. Slavery, poverty and addiction remain powerful forces of oppression today that must be met with a holistic gospel of freedom in Christ’s name.
