Grebes need a large body of water to take flight. Sometimes, they land on a deceiving shallow pool and can't take off again. Centre Wildlife Care of Port Matilda, PA asked if anyone was willing to release two grebes — Shaver's Creek gladly took up the offer and released them in the recently-refilled Lake Perez. We also took a video of the event. ShaversCreek.org
Pileated woodpeckers make large, distinctive holes in trees as a result of many hours of work. They are seeking insects that tunnel through the trees. This woodpecker devoted time to these holes just outside Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, located in central Pennsylvania, about 12 miles south of State College and Penn State's University Park.
