  2. Black sacred music is slowly being lost to America’s collective memory.

Narrated by Academy Award nominated Alfre Woodard, "Reflect, Reclaim, Rejoice: Preserving the Gift of Black Sacred Music" traces the music’s history and invites the viewer to see and feel how it’s being kept alive.

Filmed on location in Methodist churches where the oldest living African American music is still being sung – Georgia, Maryland, and South Carolina -- viewers experience how spirituals played a key role in liberating a people who had little more than a song. Four centuries ago, Blacks enslaved in America created a music form that gave solace even during the most inhumane conditions.

The film features choirs, groups, and soloists performing traditional Christian forms of the Ring Shout, Singing and Praying Bands, Long-Meter Hymns, and Negro Spirituals. These songs demonstrate how centuries of unspeakable inflictions have somehow come to represent a miraculous ability to sing a new song in a strange land.

As part of The Africana Hymnal Project of The United Methodist Church, Reflect, Reclaim, Rejoice helps connect the past and present and preserves black sacred music for generations to come.
