  2. SCREENING GUIDE:

How We Grow follows a group of youth as they learn about their identity and purpose.

Our third episode follows Cirrus as he makes a decision about what he’ll study in university. At the same time, he observes the way that competition is embedded in so many parts of our lives. Cirrus’ friend Mona asks him, “Is competing with each other our natural state, our human nature? Do societies best advance through competition?” Cirrus wonders how necessary competition is to success, whether it’s at school, in our families, communities, between large corporations and even in the world of nature.

What stood out to you about the episode?

    Comprehension:
    1. Why did Cirrus hide the pamphlet about the life sciences program behind his back when his younger brother came in? What was he saving the money for?
    2. Describe the relationship between Cirrus and Khurrosh in the episode. Why did Khurrosh take his brothers’ money?
    3. What was the challenge at the community centre? What did the youth group do about it?
    4. What happened to Mona in university and how was it affecting her?
    5. How did planting the seedlings together help them to grow? Is this an example of cooperation?
    Discussion:
    6. Cirrus and Mona discuss whether it’s human nature to only help others when we have something to gain from it. Is this true?
    7. Cirrus and Mona also talk about what motivates us. Can you describe a time you’ve worked hard on something even though you knew you wouldn’t gain anything from it? What motivated you?
    8. What environments or situations are we in that are competitive? How do the forces in these environments influence us?
    9. How can we transform environments from being competitive to being cooperative? What contributes to an environment of encouragement, support and cooperation?

    ACTIVITY
In small groups, brainstorm a short story with a beginning, middle and end that describes a time where someone cooperated when they could have competed. Once your story is clear, either write it down point-by-point in terms of what happens or create a 2-minute skit.

How We Grow is a series that is part of Illumine Media Project's ongoing learning process in Toronto neighbourhoods focused on creating media content with and for youth that represents our capacity to transform both ourselves and our environments.

Through Kamal's eyes, episode 2 explores the idea that humanity is currently in a time of such rapid change, we could even think of it as a transformation. Kamal and his friends talk about this transformation and realize that progress for their community has to be both material and spiritual.

What stood out to you about the episode?
    1. How do Kamal’s thoughts change from the beginning to the end of the episode?
    2. From Kamal’s conversation with Mr. L, what does he learn about the seniors’ computer class and the way the community could help?
    3. What do you think the outcome of these conversations will be?
    4. To help us understand the relationship between material and spiritual progress, let’s look at the following example. If someone was preparing to become a doctor, what subjects would they have to learn about? What spiritual qualities would they have to develop? Why are both the material and spiritual areas necessary for someone to be an excellent doctor?
    5. What does it mean for a school or family to advance both materially and spiritually? Can we think of examples? Why are both necessary for the world to improve?
    6. What makes a transformation different than a change?
    7. What examples of transformation did we see or hear about in the episode?
    8. Like the seed that gives up its first form in order to transform into a tree, what are some things that we give up in order to transform into something better?
    9. What is needed in terms of thoughts and attitudes to transform this environment? (the school or neighborhood)

    ACTIVITY:
On a long sheet of paper, draw a process of transformation. Something that completely changes from one state to another and cannot return to its former state. Draw how this happens.
