A short film about the work done by the charity CCYS (Crawley Community Youth Services) at the Dormans Community Centre in Crawley.
It’s funny how certain buzzwords get bandied around in professional circles. Things like empowerment, outcomes, measures, young-people focused. But when we actually give the power to young people what do they really want?
Our work within the different club settings has shown that they want a space where people are open. Open to new ideas. Open to others. Open about themselves. They want a space where everyone is included and welcomed. They want a community of their own.
Within these settings they don’t want lots of negative messages: “don’t do this”, “don’t do that”. They want positive role models and examples. They want to celebrate good positive actions. They want everyone to be treated as equals - not given special advantages or their own groups to meet their needs. They want a space where they can work to have an equal opportunity if they want it.
And of course, because much of our works is around music and arts and drama they want a space where they can be creative and have the freedom to try out new things.
As Crawley Community Youth Services we will provide an “Open Inclusive Community” where young people can be met positively, equally and creatively.
