When we were telling people that, somewhere in the east, there's a stunning postcard looking tropical place,
where a deep cowboy culture and exotic asian traditions blend flawlessly, not many of them believed us.
We had the chance to be in Masbate for 6 days during the powerful (southern US inspired) Rodeo Festival.
An immersive trip made of island hopping, horse riding, food exploring, and most of all, amazing people.
This is not the usual travel video from Wow Tapes. More than the art form, we believe that
video making is also about telling stories. For this project, we tried to capture various shots of individuals
from various sites in the Visayas in Central Philippines.
The project was shot in Calbayog and Catbalogan in Samar Province, Tacloban in Leyte, and
Bantayan Island in Cebu for a period of six days. Three years ago, their lives were changed forever as
Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest tropical cyclones to make landfall in recorded history, took away
their livelihood, their possessions, and for many, their loved ones.
This is the reason why a lot of people may not recognize familiar spots in this video which was
done on purpose. Our team tried to shy away from the usual tourism spots and focused on the daily lives
of the people doing their everyday routines. We created this video with the mission of showing how
people in the Visayas are rebuilding their lives with a subtle invite for the audience to visit and discover it
This video is an attempt to show the resilient spirit of the Filipinos guided by their unwavering
faith providing a different perspective on tourism in the process. After all, tourism is also about the
people who make every place and experience truly unforgettable.
A film we just completed for a program a company I work for (http://www.bettybelts.com )calls Betty Strong. Betty Strong is about supplying direct relief to people who suffered catastrophic loss in the recent Thomas Fire and Flood disaster here in Ventura and Santa Barbara. Each film will feature 1 or more company affiliates who embody the traits of strength, compassion and action in their lives which the company endeavors to support in via direct relief in this program's case, but also in every way possible in the work and lives of it's ambassadors. The two women in this film are Jeanette Ortiz, Surfer, Athlete Vintner and model for the company and Olivia Victoria, Actress and Model who is also a victor in a fight against Cancer. I chose these women as being the first to be featured, as I am so impressed by their lives and strength. This was shot on Samsung NX1 and Sony RX10iv and Sony a99ii cameras in Ventura, and Japan. Musical selection is titled Authenticity by Caleb Etheridge.
A Cinematographer's Demo Reel which was shot in high speed motion picture film at approx 300 fps at various locations around the world.
I was either swimming, or on a PWC for most of the shots.
Film samples are part of a commercial library I shot for Cinematographer Greg Huglin, while working for various commercial clients and publications. Still images shot in the course of this went on to become rather famous images. The footage has been seen in commercial and feature film projects globally, as well as the Museum of American History in NYC
The concept of Liquid Psalms is simply to communicate the world in which I am most comfortable and inspired: Water.
A psalm is a song or sonnet considered to be sacred. This composition consists of four psalms.
My current filming kit consists of DSLRs of course, but I have multiple high speed film camera bodies with water housings for them and are capable of frame rates up to 500 FPS.
I love the information communicated in high speed film, and find it hilarious that nowadays people are still trying to get the quality and affect duplicated in digital capture. Though it is coming along now in 2011, it STILL is not there yet for most film makers.
This was the first Music project for my son Joshua, who at 14, found and assembled the interesting mix which lead to an e mail exchange with composer Lisa Gerrard, who graciously agreed to let me put her work opposite this footage.
Edit and additive creative vision was by Rob Dafoe of Studio Bullfight in Santa Barbara.
