The word “iniquity” is the Hebrew Word (Heb:`avon). It means: perversity, depravity, iniquity, guilt or punishment of iniquity. In other words the (Heb:`avon) represents both ‘iniquity’ and the ‘punishment of iniquity’. This definition is important in understanding Isaiah 53: 5. Jesus did not just carry our sins on the Cross, He also paid the price for them thereby perfectly perfecting everything (Jn 19:30) required to deliver us from the powers of sin and reconcile us back to God. (See Leviticus 16:21-22; Romans 4:7; Hebrews 8:12).
