  2. Episode 1: Three Course Braai

15 Hopeful braai teams make history as they depart Cape Town for leg one of South Africa’s very first Ultimate Braai Master television series. It is the start of a gruelling 8000km, 52-day road trip across the length and breadth of Southern Africa.

The braai teams travel 10 hours and finally cross the Namibian border and arrive at their first destination: The Felix Unite River Camp on the banks of the Orange River.
The next morning, teams are split into three groups and have to paddle down stream to compete in the first challenge: A three-course braai of their choice for the judges; Chefs Bertus Basson and Marthinus Ferreira, Carlos Peres (nicknamed the Godfather of the Orange River) and two of his river guides. The trick? Teams have to plan, prepare and braai the three courses before sunset.

After a grilling four-hour paddle, teams arrive at the campsite and the action begins, but it’s not long before tension starts showing and personalities begin to clash. In the end three teams go into the elimination challenge the next morning, and after an emotional day the first team is sent home.

  3. Episode 2: West Coast Fare

After one team’s road trip came to an end the previous night, only 14 braai teams depart the Orange River and travel to the seaside town of Lambert’s Bay, situated on the West Coast of South Africa. Often referred to as the diamond of the West Coast because of its white beaches, wild life and rock lobsters, Lambert’s Bay marks the destination for the 2nd leg of the Ultimate Braai Master.

After enjoying a lunch of typical West Coast fare at one of South Africa’s top outdoor seafood restaurants, teams are split into two groups of seven teams. The challenge? They have only two hours to replicate the entire menu on the braai. One team proves that planning, preparation and teamwork might just be the secret ingredient to winning the title, while the other team is less focused and tensions start to rise. After an emotional and trying day ten teams have to face the elimination challenge in Scarborough, where the dream of becoming South Africa’s first Ultimate Braai Master comes to an end for two teams.

  4. Episode 3: Five Star Braai

It's the third leg of South Africa's first ever Ultimate Braai Master and the 12 remaining teams are living in luxury at the five-star Table Bay Hotel in the Mother City. This hotel is known as the 'best address in Cape Town' and is the venue for the next challenge.

After enjoying a five-star dinner at the hotel's restaurant, teams are split into three groups the following morning. They meet up with Chef Dallas Orr and he teaches them the intricacies of his five star menu in the demo kitchen. Then it's their turn to recreate the three-course meal of the night before, outside on the braai, for special guests at the hotel. Under the watchful eyes of Chefs’ Marthinus and Bertus, teams soon feel the heat of Dallas's kitchen and the pressure is on to deliver.

The next day four teams are sent into the elimination challenge in Franschhoek and in the end one team's dream of winning the car, the cash and the title is shattered.

  5. Episode 4: The Kraaifontein Crocodile

In this fourth leg in the bid to win the title of South Africa's first ever Ultimate Braai Master, the eleven remaining teams travel to the Hout Bay Harbour, on the coast of Cape Town. This ocean is one of the richest fishing grounds in the country and the braai masters have to leave their teammates behind as they go out to sea to get their first taste of catching snoek.

Some braai masters fight more with their seasickness than with actual fish, and others excel on the water with one person winning the reward for catching the first snoek. After a couple of hours of hand lining, the exhausted braai masters travel back to the harbour to reunite with their braai buddies, but they have to go straight into their next challenge: Snoek Braai.

While some teams have never braai'd snoek before, other teams are tired and stressed after a long day and the cracks start to show. By sunset, it is the end of a trying day, and three teams are sent into elimination challenge.
