1. All people involved with preparation of food for the commercial or retail market need a sound understanding of the food safety risks associated with their specific products and, importantly, how to control these risks. Failure to control food safety hazards can have devastating consequences for not only the consumer, but also the food manufacturer.

Make It Safe provides practical guidance on how to control food safety hazards, with a specific focus on controls suitable for small-scale businesses to implement.

  4. With knowledge from our deserts, Australians can reshape the human story. Dry Times: Blueprint for a Red Land provides new insights into how our desert environments and institutions work and how this affects the people living in them, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal alike.

It shows that the desert offers solutions to the challenges of living in an uncertain and threatening age, teaching us new ways to live, manage scarce resources, and cope with climatic extremes, isolation and lack of water and energy. These lessons apply not only to remote regions, but also to cities and entire nations as humanity faces growing scarcity of vital resources.

With vivid examples drawn from Australia's desert life, outback people, animals and plants, Dry Times holds many positive lessons for our nation and humanity in a changing and resource-depleted world.

  5. For almost 100 years, plant breeders have predicted the outcomes of crossing specific plants, based on one or two genes in the parents. This is especially true for qualitative traits, such as resistance or susceptibility to diseases like rust. But predictions based on three or more genes, or with multiple variants or alleles, have been less successful, especially for quantitative traits, such as grain yield or grain quality.

Although large, multinational plant breeding companies had developed computer software to predict the outcomes of specific crosses, because of intellectual property, that knowledge wasnt available. So, Howard Eagles and his team set out to develop their own prediction technology.
