'Smoker' is a mixed-media video installation: upon a plinth sits a fish tank that is made from glass and aluminum, inside the plinth sits a smoke machine, which fills the fish tank with artificial smoke. I have then projected an animation of a fish, swimming with a cigarette perched in it's mouth, onto the smoke-filled enclosure. The work is essentially a pun (and was mainly inspired by Scottish artist David Shrigley), in that: here swims a fish, in a tank of smoke with a fag in it's mouth.
It's unclear in this video - but the bottom of his tank has been littered with old cigarette butts.
Due to the translucent nature of smoke, the 2D image of the fish is stretched throughout the box; turning it into a 3D object. The installation sits in the middle of the room, so the viewer can walk around it and better witness the three-dimensionality of the image.
