This was my tribute to Mako, who passed away in 2006. He wanted everyone to know that he did not want a big public memorial service, and so the community respected that. About a year later, during the Visual Communication Film Festival, I wanted to create a visual tribute to him, and so I appropriated all the film clips I could find from his career and created this cut.
Thanks to Jeff Adachi, since I just re-purposed the interview he did for his The Slanted Screen documentary, and I ended the cut with this rare performance of Mako singing My Way with John Cho's band during the VC 30th anniversary celebration. I had come up with the idea, and put Mako and John together, and they made it happen.
This was a personal pitch video presented at a independent producers forum. A group of editors were given 3 mins. to present themselves and their work to a group of film producers. This is what I came up with.
