  2. Researchers at Trinity College Dublin have developed a software radio system for maximum application flexibility
    and minimal RF hardware. FlexRad is presented as a software radio toolkit and development system for wired and wireless communications products. A FlexRad system can be completely changed in software unlike a conventional transceiver where the application is fixed in hardware or has a limited ability to be changed after deployment.
    One concrete example of this toolkit being used in the real world: a dynamic spectrum access system was built using FlexRad that automatically detects and avoids interference to maintain a robust communications link at all times. This is a product that is tailored for robust and cost effective wireless links and connectivity. The solution uses clever detection and self-adaptation techniques and otherwise unused frequency spectrum segments or ‘white space’ in the UHF band to achieve blanket coverage and maximum building penetration across a target area.

SPARTA consists of a novel, scalable Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) FPGA cluster and a parallel ray-tracing engine that exploits the unique features of the cluster to enable photorealistic rendering of large-scale dynamic scenes at interactive frame-rates. The product will be brought to market in two stages. Initially, the hardware will be marketed as a standalone product and this will be followed closely by the ray-tracing engine. This strategy will allow early access to the market as well as providing an early income stream for the company before the ray-tracing engine is brought to market.
