On Saturday, April 25th, a magnitude-7.8 earthquake hit the small nation of Nepal, spreading horror from Kathmandu to small villages throughout the nation. Nepal police have reported that the nation’s death toll has risen to over 4,000 people and continues to rise. Other deaths have been reported in neighboring India and Tibet. Well over 1,000 of the victims were in the capital city of Kathmandu.
More than 7,180 people were injured in the quake, with estimates of tens of thousands of people having been left homeless. More than 100 earthquakes and aftershocks are making rescue work difficult, especially in the mountain villages that have been made almost impossible to reach.
Nepal quakeWe have had communication with Brother Gopal Lama, our National leader in Nepal. Brother Gopal reports that he and his immediate family in Kathmandu are safe, though their home was structurally damaged by the earthquake. They, like so many in Nepal are now staying in a tent. He has not heard from his parents or anyone living in the mountains as there are currently no communication services nor electricity there.
Asia-Oceania General Presbyter, Bishop David Browder reports that we have over 70 church fellowships in Nepal and three current operating orphanages. The local church fellowships are scattered so it may take a while to get news of just how much loss our church family has suffered. Our hearts ache for them but we continue to trust God.
Northern India has also suffered damage. We have heard from Brother Joshua, our Northern India regional leader, and he and his family are safe. He has not been able to contact his family in Nepal and reports damage in his area. He is waiting for word back from our family throughout his region.
Your intercessory prayers, love, encouragements, and financial support are needed now more than ever to help us provide necessities to our family in Nepal as they work to recover from this disaster. Won’t you consider how you can minister to our family during this time of crisis?
