Twenty-two students from Scarsdale Middle School the High School for Health Professions and Social Services in NYC, and the organization Strength-to-Strength which supports international victims of terrorism shared the poems they wrote about what people experienced on 9/11. The students, many of whom were too young to remember the event at all were able to capture the profound feelings of loss and sorrow that people experienced that day and in the weeks thereafter. The event was hosted by spoken word poet Sarah Kay of Project Voice who opened with her own 9/11 poem, “Extended Development,” about her family’s journey from darkness to light. She suggested to students that if they are dealing with a challenge, big or small, in their lives, poetry can provide a means of expression though which they can explore their feelings.
