1. Chief Fandunamata describes the story of the Kanakas' arrival in Bundaberg, as told by his grandfather to his father, and from his father to him. He is speaking to a group of ni-Vanuatu delegates and South Sea Islander descendants, as they tour the very place where the islanders were first missionised by plantation owner's daughter Florence Young, and where they first developed Bislama, the pidgin language now spoken throughout Melanesia. Ralph Regenvanu (presently the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Vanuatu). Captured by Gemma Tamock, whose ancestors were also indentured and missionised by Miss Young. Easter, 2012.

  5. Do you know what a Kanaka is? Neither did I, until I discovered it was my ancestry. Kanakas were South Seas Islanders brought to Queensland in the 19th century as indentured labourers .... or were they really slaves?

In 2000 my father and I discovered that our ancestors were Kanakas. What's a Kanaka? That was my question. The videos on this channel are part of my attempts to explore and share the history of the Kanakas - blackbirded (kidnapped) South Sea Islanders in 19th-century Queensland.

The interview subjects have generously given me their time and honored me by sharing their stories, history and memories. The young actors - both in Sydney and in Vanuatu - also kindly donated their time, talent and candour. The wonderful Australian actor, Russell Newman also lent his great talent to bring an anti-slavery activist to life.

This is a journey that is still underway. I hope you enjoy it.
