Oville is a series of short films I plan on producing next year. It's set in a fictional town "Oville" featuring characters and narratives which are somewhat interlinked. The narrative isn't fully spec'd out and will leave each episode open-ended for the subsequent to be developed. I'm using it as a platform to build my writing, directing and cinematography skills therefore each episode will be a "test" or "practice" of it's own.
The DJI Ronin
This particular episode was really in aid of getting to grips with the DJI Ronin gimbal. Everyone now knows the Ronin is heavy, moving past that, this is a great piece of kit and the learning curve isn't steep like steadicam devices (one which bought about two years ago, never used it because i just couldn't balance the thing!). However, the Ronin, I had it configured it less than 15mins.
This particular clip has a lot of camera movement just because I wanted to see if I could shoot it all on the Ronin without dismounting the camera. It gives really smooth motion (there is no post-stabilization) and enables you to do moves you couldn't do with a Steadicam like going from a low camera position all the way to head height. You can change lens and be good to go in minutes. Even if things aren't perfect, the Ronin auto-balances the configuration; something which came in really handy in this shoot.
I was monitoring using my SmallHD DP7 on the Ronin's handlebar and powered the camera from the Ronin battery (each battery lasted about 90mins). Ps. I've been warned NOT to do this. So going forward i'll be mounting the power brick somewhere on the Ronin handlebar (more weight; sad face).
To get the best out of the Ronin, I believe you need a remote follow focus. I've since purchased one and will be putting it to the test shortly!
BMPC4K + Low Light + High Contrast
Perhaps the BMPC4K wasn't the ideal camera for this shoot giving the low light and high contrast situation. The footage came out very noisy (shot 400ASA) and had to boost the footage by 2 stops in certain scenes. Footage looked like garbage but thanks to Neat Video, I was able to clean it up a little bit.
Schneider Optics Hollywood Black Magic filter
First time using the filter and I'm rather pleased with it. Softens the image and gives a nice roll-off to highlights as you'll see the the video. This compensates for the not so great highlight roll-off of the BMPC4K.
SLR Magic Anamorphot 50 1.33x
This adapter is fastly becoming a workhorse of mine. Yes it's not a 2x but it's a lot cinematic than spherical lens + cropmarks!
