Lisa Thompson, C’87, majored in mathematics in the College of Arts & Sciences and discusses how her liberal arts education gave her the ability to explore a range of academic disciplines and develop a broad set of skills that she applies daily in her career.
Thompson is currently Portfolio Manager at The Capital Group and is a member of the Advisory Board for the Penn Arts and Sciences Professional Women’s Alliance (PWA).
Toan Huynh, C’97, discusses how her degree in International Relations and Economics from the College of Arts and Sciences directly impacted her work in Asia as a consultant. She stresses the importance of a liberal arts degree in an increasingly fluid job market which requires adaptability, creativity, and interdisciplinary thinking.
On October 12th, 2016, poet and scholar Dr. Joshua Bennett C’10 returned to Penn for a poetry reading of his debut full-length collection “The Sobbing School”. The event was hosted by the Center for Africana Studies. The collection was selected by award-winning Filipino-born American poet Eugene Gloria in 2015 as a winner of the National Poetry Series. While an undergraduate in 2009, Bennett was invited to perform for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House Poetry Jam. As a graduating senior, he delivered the student graduation address for the College.
Bennett received his Ph.D. in English from Princeton University in 2015 and is currently a member of the Society of Fellows at Harvard University.
Allison Winn Scotch, C'95 is a New York Times Best-Selling Author. She has written six novels -- two of which have been optioned for film. In this Penn Perspectives interview, she discusses how her experience studying in the College and writing an op-ed column for the Daily Pennsylvanian influenced her career.
On April 8th, 2016, she spoke to students at Fox Leadership's Program, "Lessons in Leadership" and the "Real Arts @ Penn Mentoring Series" hosted by The Kelly Writer's House. Her new novel "In Twenty Years" takes place on Penn's campus and is available July 1, 2016.
