Design Fiction is not Science Fiction. It does not involve space ships, cyborgs, Holodecks or Martians, and people don’t have pointed ears or wear silly clothes or eat strange food. Instead, it is rooted in the here and now, but adds a layer of near future to that, thus blurring the boundaries between realism and fiction. It is about storytelling through and with designed objects. The stories provide context and meaning and bring people and social elements to the stage, while the objects represent the possible ways in which the envisioned technology is embodied and used.

Not surprisingly, video is an essential tool in the Design Fiction approach, as it provides the possibility to merge the richness of today’s everyday life with the possibilities of the near future in a believable and compelling way. Thus creating Design Fiction videos can be considered a substitute for interactive prototyping, that allows for the exploration of the precise flow on interaction without the use of any technology, in situations that are too complex to physically prototype or to make experiential.

ASSIGNMENT
In this final assignment students are asked as a team of four a DESIGN FICTION VIDEO OF ABOUT 3-4 MINUTES, that presents a story about the envisioned use and impact of a future product or technology. You will be provided with a short description as a starting point, from which you should develop your own scenario that shows how the proposed technology is integrated into daily practices; how it is being used and by whom; what its effects, both positive and negative, could be and how it might influence or change people’s practices, relations, attitudes, beliefs etc.
