1. My grandparents, Thelma and Pete Miller embarked from Oklahoma in 1926 in a Model T Ford. They traveled over a wooden plank road and it took them 7 days while they camped along the way with their two daughters, Eloyce ,2 years old and Lowetta an infant. The lyrics in this song are taken almost word for word out of my mother's memoir. My grandparents moved around a lot to find work. Pete worked in the gold mines in Northern California and the copper mines in Globe Arizona. They owned a bakery, a gas station, a dairy ranch over the years. I grew up hearing my mother Eloyce telling interesting stories of her childhood and adventures moving about during the depression. I have fond memories of my grandparents Thelma and Pete and this song is a tribute to their pioneer and can-do spirit. Below are the lyrics:

We Left Shawnee Oklahoma 6 days ago, the going's been slow on this wooden plank road
Everything we own is on this Ford Model T, Two baby girls riding in the back seat
We slept out on the ground under the bright desert stars
You made us a fire, while I rummaged through the car, a pot for the coffee and a pan to make some beans
Another roadside meal while we talked about our dreams

Its my Irish blood that makes me roam, from place to place with you I call my home...
And the western wind calls our names... to the land where the sun melts in the sea
And we'll dance in the sand to our own drum beat... We are Thelma and Pete

The Ford barely made it up over steam terrain..Landing in LA in the pouring down rain
No job and little money, we got a cheap motel
You found work digging ditches, I made things to sell
We moved around alot during those hard depression years
You worked at everything, I shed many tears
But I wouldn't trade a minute of our rough and crazy life
From the Gold fields in the North, to the Arizona Mines

    Repeat Chorus..
