Before North Carolina vineyards reached the hundreds, before their wines got national acclaim and before the industry became a tourism draw across the state, there was Jack Kroustalis and some land the so-called "experts" said could never grow grapes. Little did the Westbend Vineyards founder know that he would be making history by planting the Yadkin Valley's first vinifera grapevines.
Throwing caution and the advice of state agricultural agents to the winds, Kroustalis planted the roots of what is now a thriving industry statewide when he began growing grapes in 1972 on his property in Lewisville. To the astonishment of many, several of the vines flourished. More acreage was planted and, by 1986, Kroustalis found he had grown to a 70-ton grape harvest.
“Westbend” became a commercial bonded winery in 1988. The first Westbend wines, made from traditional European grapes, were released in June 1990. Early on, Jack set out to get Westbend wines into local restaurants and retailers. Soon, Westbend wines were carried in well-known restaurants such as the Angus Barn and large retailers such as Total Wine and Harris Teeter.
Then came national attention. Westbend picked up favorable press in such publications as Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate. As far back as 1995, Robert Parker, widely acknowledged to be the most widely known and influential wine critic in the world and founder of “The Wine Advocate”, stated “One of the South's best kept wine secrets is Westbend Vineyards in Lewisville, North Carolina.
In 2005, Westbend expanded by purchasing a 25 acre tract adjacent to the existing vineyard. The newly acquired property included a hand-sewn log home, the Joel Benjamin Hauser House.
The “Hauser House” is made from hand-notched logs and was constructed by J.B. Hauser and his wife Margaret in 1850. Extensively renovated and expanded in 2008, the home is now a multipurpose event center and meeting facility with kitchen, vaulted ceilings, fireplace and a private covered deck overlooking the vineyards. The venue can accommodates up to 175 people for weddings, banquets, and private parties.
Long known for its weddings, other Westbend events began to flourish. Art shows, car shows, concerts, private parties and other special events became commonplace and drew large crowds.
Seeking to expand their demographics and increase their customer base even more, Westbend took notice of the rapidly growing microbrewery business. In February 2012, after extensive research, Westbend invested over $350,000 to became only the second winery in North Carolina to offer locally-brewed craft beers. With its five-barrel state-of-the-art brewing equipment “Westbend Brewhouse” began by offering five year-round brews plus seasonals. It was an immediate hit.
Sadly, Jack Kroustalis passed away in 2006 at age 74. Lillian and their son Alex have carried on the family business ever since. Now, this historic winery and brewery has been made available for sale. Contact MidStreet for more details.# vimeo.com/122094716 Uploaded 1,487 Plays 1 Like 0 Comments

With over 28 years of experience, Distinctive Landscaping & Remodeling Company offers an array of services for busy real estate companies and home owners. Located in Corolla on the famed beaches of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, DLAR has grown over the years to become the largest landscaping maintenance company and the largest exterior and interior renovation/remodeling company in the area.
In 1985, NC 12, the main artery of the Outer Banks’ northern beaches, was opened and areas such as Corolla, Corova, Pine Island and Duck experienced an incredible boom in construction. Today, hundreds of multi-million dollar vacation homes welcome hundreds of thousands of vacationers to the northern beaches and make Corolla one of the most desirable upscale vacation destinations in the country.
A vast majority these vacation rental homes are owned by absentee investors who reside outside of North Carolina. Due to their absence, property owners are in need of reputable local vendors they can trust. DLAR was founded near the beginning of area’s rapid growth and has established, long term relationships with some of the region’s top vendors, sub-contractors and property management companies.
With the use of quality materials and sound building practices, DLAR has built valuable relationships with property management companies and an enviable reputation with both residential and commercial customers. DLAR currently does very little marketing and advertising, choosing to rely almost exclusively upon referrals and repeat business.
The largest and most profitable segment of the business is repair, renovation and remodeling services. Harsh environmental conditions constantly wreak havoc on these large coastal properties. Although most homes in the area are less than 25 years old, substandard building practices were employed by many area builders. These poor construction practices included items such as improper detailing around windows, doors and flashings. This has led to a multitude of significant problems that will eventually need to be addressed by homeowners.
While not a primary focus of the business, periodic storms that frequent the area not only harm homes, but also damage landscaping and yards, providing a significant demand for storm clean-up services and further enhancing revenue opportunities. Even with the best built properties, there will always be some kind of maintenance that needs attention. All these factors combine to ensure there will a substantial amount of work for quality building contractors for many years to come.
The business employs experienced landscaping and remodeling superintendents and has instituted systems that allow the owner to operate the business without having to be physically present. Management has been diligent in training company employees as evident in certifications the company holds from multiple manufacturers. All employees are trained to strictly follow OSHA regulations, clean-up the work-site at the end of each day and also follow DLAR’s strict guidelines.
The company maintains a significant backlog of contracts that will be transferred to buyer upon closing.# vimeo.com/122092669 Uploaded 115 Plays 0 Likes 0 Comments
