When enlightenment is outlawed, only outlaws get enlightened.
One of the primary aims of the Integral approach to Christianity is to return first-hand experience of divinity to it central place in the Christian path -- spiritual states of consciousness that are disclosed and cultivated through committed spiritual practice such as meditation or contemplative prayer. Today's world has moved beyond belief-based spirituality -- it’s no longer enough to simply believe, we need to taste it for ourselves, recognize it as ourselves.
However, over the centuries religious institutions began to enforce fairly severe restrictions on what sorts of spiritual experiences were allowed in Christendom, placing a theological ceiling on enlightenment while effectively outlawing some of the most important and transformative states of spiritual awakening. Even discussing spiritual realities beyond those officially sanctioned by the Church could be enough to cost you your life. Fortunately many Christians today are returning to the same sorts of direct mystical experience that birthed the tradition in the first place — a “return to the heart” if ever there was one.
So let’s take a moment to acknowledge all the enlightened outlaws, mystic fugitives, and awakened desperados throughout history who have risked (and often lost) life and limb in order to give voice to timeless Truth — voices that continue to call to us through centuries-deep sediments of myth, dogma, and superstition.

Almost every major religion breeds ascetics; wandering monks who have renounced all earthly possessions, dedicating their lives to the pursuit of spiritual liberation.Their reality is dictated only by the mind, not material objects. Even death is not a fearsome concept, but a passing from the world of illusion.
