In late October, Formidable Dreams Expanded Cinema transformed Silent Funny, a nuts and bolts factory turned art house venue on Chicago's west side into an unexpected dark encounter. In partnership, Eugene Sun Park and Sara Zalek presented works in progress, related to their upcoming series of films, Formidable Dreams. Now we are left to decipher its content, to reveal and reconstruct it's parts, to assemble its whole. To grow, in time.

Currently seeking partners in transitional spaces where installations, in whole or in part, could remain for a duration, for intimate viewing as well as occupied by performances in specific intervals.
    PM if interested!

  3. "As we mature, literally and otherwise, we find importance in what supports that great balance of inclusion, of difficult themes next to joyous ones. Our integrity in the face of our fragile and childish hearts is what holds us upright. One's relentless disclosure leads to beholders' disclosure."

In the last year, I have been faced with death profoundly, losing three of my most important mentors in my life, my teacher, my grandmother, and my father. Just weeks ago, during the last days of my father's life, I helped to bathe, feed, and honor him with unwavering endurance and compassion. In these moments, I watched him as he reached again and again for some other world, as he traversed the places between life and death. It has left me longing to be close to him in ways I no longer can, I must acknowledge that there are places I cannot venture until it is my time and my place. On a recent visit to Prague, I found myself on a serendipitous trek to exhibits about Death, bound to the lives and deaths of humans on a scale I rarely consider. My creative spirit was affirmed, for even amidst the devastation of death, art could connect me to the spiritual support of my human race.

In honor of life, of death, and the space I currently occupy that is in between. There is this space I find myself in now, an unfamiliar place, not knowing what is “right” or even how to be in the world. The dance is a question that lies somewhere between public and private, between art and life, between personal and political. I wish to be free from moral and ethical questions, but I find I am unable to separate. Through dance, I wish to connect, to overcome my fear of isolation, to believe in my intuition, to see myself through your eyes. I reveal my soul in hopes that I can honestly connect with your subconscious.

    APRIL 18-19, 2015
    Chicago Cultural Center
    Presented by Butoh Chicago
    Curated by Sara Zalek
Cinematography & Editing: Eugene Sun Park
Improvisation and innovation are both themes characterized in contemporary butoh performance. As art critic Mark Holborn of the New York Times points out, “butoh is defined by its very evasion of definition.”
One of the major developments in 20th century contemporary dance, butoh combines dance, theater, improvisation and influences of Japanese traditional performing arts to create a unique art form that is both controversial and universal in its expression.
Featured artists are renowned for their use of butoh in performance, invoking the spark of transformation and revealing the mystery of the live moment. For more information visit butohchicago.com.
