1. Launch from Glacier Point and land in Leidig Meadow, everybody is off by 9:30 AM and down by 10:30 AM. This happens throughout the summer, but being an early morning event (we were up at 4:30 AM) and a silent one, few park visitors are aware of it.

Draft - 2010-01-03. Minor edits still needed.

  2. After learning to Hang-Glide in Japan in 1981 and flying there almost daily until 1986, I was transferred to Los Angeles. My dream had always been to fly from Glacier Point at Yosemite.
The launch is about 3,000 feet of sheer cliff above the valley floor. Only the most experienced licensed pilots can fly there under the auspicious of the National Park Rangers. The flights take place earlier in the morning before the crazy valley winds start up and the flights are pure sled-rides that last about 15 minutes, ending at Leidig meadows. I had never flown with cameras before and the VHS camera mounted on the keel (behind me) weighed about 15 lbs. Additionally I had a 35mm camera mounted on the wing - both without counter-weights. DUH! It was a very interesting flight, but the beauty and serenity were unmatched by anything I had experienced up until that time. Since then I have flown Yosemite numerous times and eventually was a volunteer hang-gliding monitor for a few years.
