This is first tutorial from collection of tips and tricks on destruction simulations that I am planning to record.
In this short video I explained how to create orient attribute from scratch, to add proper rotation to particles.
Illustrated method is my adaptation of technique that I found on the internet, and converted it from VOP's to use in VEX.
(completely forgot to mention in the video that ship's sail actually pulls the ship forward with flex's cloth drag and lift forces affecting it...)
the plugin itself it available on github: github.com/pedohorse/Houdini-NvFlex
you will also find there some convenient assets for creating cloth, rbd, softbody and fluids from geometry, but direct control over flex data is mapped onto houdini geometry so feel free to play around with as you wish.
(it's a bit complicated to install it right now, and precompiled binaries available only for windows.)

Yay, another grey-orange video :)
Some more destruction RnD in Houdini, still much room for improvement! This time, rendered with Mantra, some comp in Nuke.
Video Compression kills the smaller details a bit, but oh well...
