Within the first twelve verses of John, he makes the purpose of writing the gospel known to the reader - that you may believe. He says, "But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God...." (Jn 1:12). Again, he ends the gospel with the words, "... these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God...." (Jn 20:31). Written closer to about 100 AD, this gospel not only captures the life of Jesus but also the theological reflection of a faith community upon the Christ event. This is because the author and the final editor simply have had more time to reflect upon the identity, mission, and purpose of Jesus and his disciples. Thus, the Eucharist, the real presence, sin and reconciliation and other issues are addressed in the gospel with the intention of leading people to believe in Jesus. We invite you this intriguing session of exploring the main themes in the gospel of John.
