1. A beached whale was rescued yesterday in Mandurah.
Volunteers, passersby, Dept Parks and Wildlife, Fisheries, and WA Police assisted in the effort to save a beached whale.
There was some debate over what type of whale it was. It’s believed to be a “False Killer Whale.” It was about 3.1m long.
The whale was found at Falcon Beach this morning. There were several attempts made to get the animal back in the water, but it kept beaching itself.
The decision was made to relocate the animal to the Dawesville Marina (Port Bouvard Marina in Wannanup).
The animal was first moved onto a larger sling, then carried up the beach where a hydraulic hoist was used to assist putting the animal on a trailer.
Police provided an escort to the marina.
The animal was lowered into the water, and then taken out by boat while still in the sling.
    Good news:
Parks and Wildlife report that upon releasing the whale it swam away strongly, and was “observed porspoising” (appearing above water), and was last sighted swimming toward the estuary.
