Second Peter 3 is the final session Peter had with the growing churches he had poured his life into. They were now scattered across the heart of the Roman Empire. They were facing both fiery trials, and glittering allurements. They were torn between: loyalty to Christ and painful persecutions, or floating along with the world and its endless pursuits of pleasure and possessions.
Peter’s Last Days: Here he is at the end of the road. I can just see him now with his gnarled fisherman’s hands, and the skin of his face and arms still leathery from all his years on boats in the sun, those eyes still piercingly full of zeal. Peter never lost the wonder of Jesus. He has lived everyday with purpose.Jesus had called out to him as a young businessman, and said to “Follow Me”; and Peter had.
Once the Spirit fell upon him, Peter was consumed with the message of the cross all his days. Now, as he nears the end, one last time Peter writes to keep his beloved fellow saints on track. As he does so, he warns that the coming fires are on the same level of catastrophe as the Flood.
The Almighty God who sees everything, knows everything, and is infinitely wise, has a plan. That plan involves ending the sin, death, evil, and rebellion in this world. That plan has been written down and is ours today.
As we start our study of this next section it reminds us that ONLY God knows the future. No person, no demon, no astrologer, no prophet, no writer, no one but God KNOWS the future. That is one of the most amazing facets of God’s character. He never is surprised. God always knows what WILL happen; and only He knows that. We need to listen to God.
