1. This talk by Brad Frost was held at beyond tellerrand 2013, May 27 – 29, in Düsseldorf where he announced his brand new Pattern Lab (patternlab.bradfrostweb.com).

    Description:
"We’re not designing pages anymore. We’re designing systems of components." As with most things Stephen Hay says, he's right. Over the last few years, the Web community has been creating robust design systems that encourage consistency, facilitate collaboration and establish future-friendly foundations. This session will discuss the mental shift required to design systematically, and will cover how to go about implementing your very own design system.

  2. Stephen is one of the most calm and nice people. besides speaking, he also organizes events like CSSday or mobilism together with Krijn and PPK. In 2014 I was able to get him from Amsterdam to Düsseldorf to give a fantastic talk.

    Title: “Maintaining Simplicity”

    Description:
    ---------------
Everyone talks about the benefits of simplicity. Yet many of us end up adding a heavy amount of complexity to inherently simple things. In fact, many web designers and developers end up spending significant amounts of project time undoing problems caused by complexities added early in the design process. In effect, we often ruin the things we build during the process of building them, but it doesn't have to be that way. In this session, Stephen looks at how and why we complicate things, and then looks at how an exaggerated application of progressive enhancement can help us maintain simplicity and increase value for the people using the things we make.

  3. John Allsopp made the long journey from Australia to Berlin to join us for the first beyond tellerrand in Berlin.

Title: The Web's future is offline

    Description:
    ---------------
The Web is in most people's mind synonymous with the internet. And that of course means no internet connection, no Web. However this association is holding back how, and what, we build for the Web.

Just as native apps can, once installed, run on a device even with poor or now connectivity, it's a little known fact that so too can Web sites and apps. In this session, John will look at the technologies that enable the offline Web, including AppCache, Web Storage, and Service Workers, and more importantly the philosophy behind, and opportunity presented by the 'offline first' Web.

Whether you're a developer who build for the Web, or someone who designs Web experiences, you'll come away with a whole new understanding of what we can build using Web technologies.

  4. Jon Hicks is one of the people that I was trying to get to beyond tellerrand since year one. It finally worked out for Berlin, which made me very happy. Enjoy his talk …

    Title: The Icon Design Process

    Description:
    ---------------
Icons are more than just pretty decorative graphics for sites and applications, they are little miracle workers. They summarize and explain actions, provide direction, offer feedback and even break through language barriers. Whether you design icons yourself or just need to be able to work with them, this session will take you through the whole process of designing and deploying resolution independent icons—from the initial brief, to choosing format or method to deploy them. On the way it will cover choosing the right metaphor, achieving visual balance, and using techniques such as icon fonts and SVG for scalable and lightweight distribution.

Title: Momentum: Crafting a Creative Culture

    Description:
    ---------------
We have arrived in an age of design. No longer relegated to a function of the marketing department or tacked on to an engineering process, Designers are increasingly taking leadership positions in the top companies in tech. But how do we manage creative teams to achieve their full potential? I'll share stories from my years of leading product development — both successful and not — to show that investing in culture might be the best competitive edge you can gain.
