This has been a fun one, I worked on this for the past 1 and a half Months in my spare time. Inspired by The Kronos work in Wrath Of the Titans (MPC), and the Volcano Eruption/Collapse in Jounrey 2 (Scanline). It all started as FX RnD that I wanted to push futher into a fun shot.
Most of the FX was Max Based, the Destruction of the Volcano Top was all ThinkingParticles, Lots of Fume FX and PFlow Sims for the Dust and Debris Clouds/trails. Some Maya nCloth in there for the bushes, RealFlow for the Lava Eruption Fluid Sim (FLIP). All Rendered in V-Ray.
The TP Setup turned into a little TD Tool for Volcano Breaking, Its a 3 level fracutre setup, using Pre Frag with RayFire and then VB to break up based on Vel and Collison. Lots of Debris Instances on top. The Fume Setups varied in Complexity, For Sims like the Main Plume I used Effectors to define the Turbulence by Velocity for more realistic breakup in the smoke/dust. A Mix of Particle and Simple Srcs used throughout. The Lava Cooling was done via playing with the Velocity inside RealFlow and using Frost to get the Vertex Colours transferred on a VRay Lava Shader. Bushes were Proxies sim'd in nCloth and PFlow however quite lowres as there quite far away. Dust and Air Shockwaves were both Fume Sims also. Comp in AE.
