While Hugh Hefner embodies the Playboy lifestyle, selling the fantasy of the girl next door, Bob Guccione chose to make his images more realistic and relatable, photographing Penthouse Pets against scenery of the cities his readers lived in. Penthouse took direct aim at Playboy a mere few years after it began, creating a series of ads portraying Playboy as the hare and Penthouse as the tortoise.
