These are the notes
of the Director & Cinematographer Leonardo Corbucci
after he used these exclusive prototype lens for a more Cinematic Look.
Leonardo Corbucci: I received this 2.0 Prototype 1.6X Anamorphic Zoom lens 30mm to 119mm at T4.0 just one week before the shooting. The lens didn't have any info on it (no even focus marks!). But already feel solid and smooth in the rotation. You can find 3 pictures of this prototype lens on my Instagram Album. Curious enough the color of the zoom was bright orange and red (Previous from Travor I received another lens (The 1.0) for test that was completely black. Between the first and the second Prototype lens I notice huge upgrades and many problems fixed. I am waiting impatiently my self the release version of the lens.
In this music video I used also (but just for few shots) some Gopro Hero 3, it will be easy for you to recognize which are from the "Gopro-wide-look" they have. For everything else I used this Prototype. The camera was a Sony FS700 with Canon mount (not a Metabone speed booster but just a regular one from China). I used this camera because it is a light portable camera with good slow motion capability (and I was in need of a lot of slow motion), great compromise.
NOTE - Upgrades and problems fixed between 1.0 generation to 2.0 generation prototype: -minimum focal distance now around 1ft, -Internal stabilization optimized, -sharp focus at all length, -Better Low light (from 5.6 to 4.0), - Less flare, -More solid built, -lighter lens!
It is the first time I use such a small and light Anamorphic Zoom Lens, and it was really a good, good advantage ( surprised to find out how fast is to set up such a small lens and how sharp it is at the same time (I often use the Lomo Anamorphic lenses, both versions, square and circle front. This lens is sharper then any Lomo I previously used).
Thanks to the small size it was possible for me to cover shoots I never did before with Anamorphic lenses, the camera mount was much easer, the shoots inside the car again much easer, and in any other location it was always better to have the option of corners and angles that you will never reach with the other big anamorphic lenses.
Of course if you are shooting a big budget Hollywood film, you want the best quality at any cost. But in the case of Indy FilmMakers, shooting music videos or independent Feature Film, this is the best compromise I ever used. Much better then a Lomo Lens, much smaller and portable. The quality? Check yourself in this music video!
I know the manufactory want to keep the price really low, and that will be the key for the success of this Lens in the market. If this Zoom Lens will be around the $2,000 price it will be a killer and a lot of filmmakers will have a lot of fun.
EOC NOTE: The Pre-orders of this lens (for sell and rental) should be available in these months. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested.
