This paper analyzes the appearance of the term “dimai” in legal documents from the Nanbu County Archive (Sichuan), local inscriptions, Daoist manuals, and contracts. The term’s religious, ritual, and legal connotations will illuminate its functions as a marker of space and territory, recognized both by local society and the state. The Nanbu County Archive will allow us to see the functions of this category across cultural, religious, and lineage-based communities such as Muslims, Daoists, and individual families.
