(2370) "With the advent of the internet and new media technologies, media organizations have been utilizing new strategies in their operations. This descriptive study was conducted to present the case of Bayan Mo iPatrol Mo, the citizen journalism project and newsgathering unit of ABS-CBN and how it applies the concept of crowdsourcing through the use of social media. This research used the case study method. The study was conducted in Iloilo City and in Manila, Philippines from November 2012 to January 2014. The researcher used in-depth interview augmented by narratives using an interview schedule as a guide, documentary research, and non-participant observation using field notes to gather data for the study. The data gathered were analyzed and interpreted using qualitative means.
The results of the study revealed that crowdsourcing through social media is an effective strategy for newsgathering. ABS-CBN, through Bayan Mo,iPatrol Mo (BMPM) has successfully combined people, processes, and technology in newsroom operations where crowdsourcing and social media take center stage. The study also found that the use of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter by news organizations is beneficial both in news gathering and distribution. Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo (BMPM) has revolutionized the way news is gathered by tapping citizen journalists and using social media, showing that the practice of journalism has changed significantly. The study further revealed that the heart of the BMPM operations is its vetting process, which is key to maintaining high journalistic standards."
