  3. "Otherwordly" is a speculative Fiction of a wider project named "The Promises Of Monsters"

A project by Laura Mannelli, in collaboration with Frederick Thompson featuring a sound fiction by Fonclair.

"The Promises Of Monsters" offers a speculative fiction that connects a 14th century poem, Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy and the "virtual realities". Following the adage Form Follows Fiction, it’s a narrative scenography that plunges us into a near future where Luxembourgers exploit asteroids. You follow the traces of nine "Méta-Wanderer" (network explorers) that mysteriously disappeared. Their bodies. But not their activities on digital and electromagnetic networks.

"The Promises of Monsters", whose title comes from Donna Haraway's "Cyborg Manifesto", could be a "design fiction" project. A set of artifacts staged in a cabinet of curiosities, given to manipulate to an audience so that they confront a possible world. An interpretation of Dante Alighieri's poem directly inspired by the manga "Ghost In The Shell". What do these new paradigms promise for us? To resume Hugo Gernsback, "Extravagant Fiction Today - Cold Fact Tomorrow" (extravagant fiction today, brutal reality of tomorrow).

The exhibition is open from October 19 to february 2nd 2018, from Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.
Independence Gallery, BIL, 69, route d'Esch, L-1470 Luxembourg.
