5 minute excerpt of an hour long performance by Ryder Cooley & Hazel with Alan Joseph and Spartacus, Body as Omen Performance Series, Ortega Y Gasset Projects, Brooklyn NY, curated by Sheilah Wilson 2014.
The performance began on a rooftop in the rain. The performers processed across the roof, through the vast hallways of a large industrial building, and into the Ortega Y Gasset gallery space. Ashes were scattered intermittently amidst the ringing a bell and the flapping of owl wings. Inside the gallery, Ryder & Hazel perched like an owl atop the gallery wall, scattering ashes and performing gestures, while Alan and Spartacus gestured and interacted with viewers on the ground. An ambient soundtrack played, and a red light cast an eerie glow throughout the gallery. This ritual was performed by hybrid human-animal forms, calling upon the spirit of the owl to release the ashes of the past, and to soar ahead with fortitude.
