1. Ace Kvale turned 60 last fall, and to celebrate, he planned a 60-day, off-trail backpacking trip around Utah's Canyon Country, leaving from his front door.

He had a dozen friends join him for different sections of the trip, and one friend who joined him for the whole thing: his blue heeler, 10-year-old Genghis Khan aka 'Desert Dog'.

Covering over 400 miles on their journey presented it's challenges but the special relationship between Ace and Genghis proved most powerful.

  2. Recently got a drone and I've always wanted to see White Pocket from the air. The patterns in the sandstone seem to be even more interconnected with each other the higher up you go. Its a magical place.

  3. The Escalante is one the iconic wilderness complexes of the Colorado Plateau. Much of the year, the only way to traverse this labyrinth of sandstone canyons is through complex routefinding over technical terrain. The canyon floor is a jungle of willows and cottonwoods and box canyons. But on above average snow-years, the tiny Escalante swells to something almost resembling boatable flows. And in 2017, we thought it was our year.

We set out over Memorial Day hoping to float from Highway 12 to Crack in the Wall. As our launch date neared, it became obvious there was not enough water in the Escalante, and we would be relying solely on the Boulder to get us to floatable levels. With a quick change of plans, we descended to the river at Fence Canyon, hoping to catch the last wave of snowmelt and get to Coyote Gulch before the flows evaporated entirely.

I’ve visited this zone for years, almost always in search of technical canyons. To be able to float through this on a packraft almost feels like cheating, especially when you don’t have to tangle with the invasive Russian Olive that used to choke this river. Being able to see the lower canyon nearly free of Russian Olive is truly awesome, and it is an incredible tribute to Bill Wolverton who has dedicated his life to restoring the canyon.

  4. We have created an interactive media experience to add some context to Trump’s controversial reversal of President Obama’s establishment of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase National Monuments. Within the interactive player, you can read Obama’s original proclamation, a document carefully constructed in close collaboration with an unprecedented coalition of tribes and scientists. You will also find maps and images of some of the sacred sites that are no longer protected and which are now vulnerable to renewed looting and mining.

The Hopi, Navajo, Ute, Ute Mountain Ute and Zuni tribal governments and a broad coalition of non profits and businesses are now suing Donald Trump and they need our help.

We conclude with links to opportunities to make financial contributions to those efforts and other ways to join the fight to save these precious national treasures.

Thank you for support and for sharing this important effort with your friends and networks.
