Reading the Bible in your own language is empowering, and it changes people’s lives when they are able to understand what God is saying. But first, men, women and children need the opportunity to learn how to read and write. To be able to read and educate your children is power, and it offers freedom as people learn how God views them and how much he loves them. Wycliffe believes that everyone needs the chance to hear the gospel as if their mother was talking directly to them, and that’s why we participate in this significant work of Bible translation.

In the late 1980s, translators John and Bonnie Nystrom came alongside several men from Arop village in Papua New Guinea to translate the Bible into the local language. But a decade later, a massive tsunami took the lives of many in Arop village, including one of the translators. As a result, their translation work took a new direction.

Wycliffe Bible Translators is proud to present this short film about the Nystrom family and the sacrifice, teamwork and faith of the Aitape West Translation Project team in the face of tragedy. We encourage you to set aside an evening to watch it with your family, or share it with your church and other members of your community. Grab a cup of coffee or some popcorn and enjoy this film together! And don’t forget to get the accompanying discussion questions so your group can further engage with the Arop story.

Wycliffe President Bob Creson and his wife, Dallas, say thanks to all the passionate, dedicated Wycliffe partners around the world who have played a role in advancing Bible translation.
In their message, they include up-to-date statistics on the global status of Bible translation. And they stress that everyone deserves to have the story of Jesus in their own language. Because that’s not yet the case — though work is progressing — they encourage viewers to keep praying, to take joy in their personal time in Scripture, and to find encouragement in the support they are giving to people and projects all over the world.
