Behind The Edit //
Most people would wager that a song like this is an odd pick for a wedding film, but to us - for this couple and this wedding - is was bang on. I was so excited when talking to Melanie about music choices because she wanted something big and epic, and as soon as I showed this song to her she was all in. Mel + James have really big personalities so to me this song was perfect - something quiet and acoustic just wouldn't cut the mustard for these two. This is a pretty heavy tune though so you've got to have the 'cahonas' (and the patience - I just really wanted to say 'cahonas') to make sure every single epic beat matches in perfect unison with very specific pieces of footage (you really can't ignore even a second of the music when editing to a song like this or it kind of flops a bit - every beat is important).
After watching the incredible 'Watchtower of Turkey' I got a really great boost of inspiration and started focusing on building some sound into the intro to pull people into the location of Fiji, and from there it was just a matter of matching all the interesting little sounds in the music to movement and action in the shots (whilst keeping one giant eye on the overall narrative so that it wasn't just a mess of unrelated shots). I wanted this film to be super smooth and not too jarring which is why cutting the action specifically to the sound of the music was really important for me, and using a lot of match cuts with things like colour/movement/shapes etc played a big roll too in smoothing out certain sections.
At the end of the day I like to keep our films as real as possible so surprisingly there's really no effects used in this film - it's all natural in-camera movement shot by Andrew with some crafty use of those movements by yours truely.
