  2. Typography and its attention to detail have been overlooked in the digital sphere for years. Until recently, we've been able to chalk that up to the technology and a lack a fluidity across platforms—but that's all changed.

AIGA WM welcomed Terrance Weinzierl, a Grand Rapids-based Type Designer at Monotype, a leading global provider of type, technology and expertise, as he shed some light on type design for screen use, browser font rendering, the current state of web fonts, and where the industry is headed.

  3. Pan-European design collective Underware's Tour Du Champagne stopped in Grand Rapids for a one day type workshop at the UICA.

We survived like Robinson Crusoe on the streets of Grand Rapids, just by using our typographic skills. While not being allowed to talk, we had to collect as many kisses or smiles as possible. We used our creative skills to collect surface and writing tools for text, and made the most appropriate lettering. Most kisses/smiles = win win win.

Big thanks to our sponsors: The Forest, Superior Printing and Skyward Visual!

  4. Held in September 2011, Design For Good - West Michigan 2011 was a hyper-local, multi-disciplinary, throw-your-old-notions-out-the-window community event. West Michigan’s best laid their talents on the line for 24/1 (anything more, we feared, would get out of hand). Good designers do good work for companies that do good.

There are few things more powerful than good design meeting the challenge of a good cause. It’s a one-two punch. Our program, Design for Good, gave us a chance to connect with our community in powerful, lasting and personal ways. We hope that it demonstrates that design can be much more than just aesthetics. At its most basic level, it’s about solving problems; and a designer’s insights have the power to shift thinking, actions, and organizations. It’s also about doing the work—experiencing first-hand what is successful and what isn’t—then, taking that knowledge and expanding it—through your professional career or in your community.

We teamed up with local non-profits: Carol’s Ferals, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, Grand Rapids Public Schools, Kids’ Food Basket and Seeds of Promise.

Thanks to Trevor Dobias and Skyward Visual for documenting the event!

+ More

AIGA advances design as a professional craft, strategic advantage and vital cultural force. As the largest community of design advocates, we bring together practitioners, enthusiasts, and patrons to amplify the voice of design and create the vision for a collective future. We define global standards and ethical practices, guide design education, enhance professional development, and make powerful tools and resources accessible to all.
Our local chapter, AIGA West Michigan, was founded in 2009, uniting a group of professionals and students with diverse backgrounds but a common interest in design. We aim to create a place where design can be discovered, discussed, understood, and appreciated. Our programming focuses on ways to inspire our members, learn new things, and connect with each other and the community.

With nearly 300 members, we are among the fastest growing chapters of AIGA, the oldest and largest professional organization for design. Nationally, AIGA represents over 20,000 design professionals, educators and students through national activities and local programs developed by 67 chapters and 200 student groups.
