Alaska Children's Eye & Strabismus

The Enhanced Brückner Test (EBT) adds more refractive detection to the already useful strabismus detection capacity for Brückner and can uncover retinal and optic nerve pathology, as well. View both of the patient's pupils through a direct ophthalmoscope from about 2/3 of a meter; a positive Brückner is an asymmetry in the deepness of the red-reflex color with the lighter color often due to a non-foveating, micro strabismic / amblyopic eye. Part of the enhancement is to add swinging flash light test at a relative distance that decreases accommodative mitosis- a Marcus-Gunn, relative afferent pupil defect can be observed. The final "enhancement" is to view the pupils over the top, and from the side of the direct ophthalmoscope; this can yield a bright pupillary crescent due to defocus in on or more eyes, in one or more meridia.
