Amazing Sky Videos

I present a short 3-minute music video featuring time-lapses of the display of Northern Lights (aurora borealis) over Crawling Lake, Alberta, on the night of June 24/25, 2017.

This was a bit of a surprise display but turned out to be a decent show. I was at the lake to shoot noctilucent clouds, a phenomenon unique to summer solstice and mid-latitudes, but ended up shooting about 1200 frames for these time-lapses instead as the aurora appeared at nightfall and continued through the short summer night. Peak of the display was about 1 a.m. MDT. Some noctilucent clouds are visible very low on the horizon. But the aurora was the star of the solstice sky show.

I shot the sequences with a Nikon D750 and 20mm lens, and a Canon 6D and 14mm lens, the latter camera on a SYRP Mini Genie motion controller. Processing with Camera Raw, LRTimelapse, Photoshop, and assembled with MicroProjects Time-Lapse with 1- and 2-frame tweening.

The beginning and end of the video feature still images, including the finale panorama stitched from four panels shot specifically for the panorama between time-lapse sequences.
