1. The land is the heart of our culture. It gives us our identity...our place. We demonstrate respect for the land and its resources through our stewardship...the land in turn takes care of us. This ongoing relationship of reciprocity is the embodiment of true respect for the land.

Native American culture requires an active and demonstrated respect for the places we inhabit. Native people care for their land in a manner that reflects tribal values and supports economic stability - as well as meeting the physical and spiritual needs of the culture. We understand that nature is not separate from us or our care; we recognize that our actions have consequences as does our inaction.

  2. "Nature" is indiscriminate. From an ecological and environmental standpoint, man-made boundaries are not the best solution. When we plan within arbitrary boundaries that nature does not recognize, we leave the land and the people at risk. To truly adjust our care and management of the land in accordance with nature, we must plan across boundaries.

We, and our future generations will have to live with the consequences and choices of our actions or inactions. Tribal and public landholders must come together to address the current and long term needs and issues attached to the vast amount of land in our care.

  3. We recognize climate change and our need to adjust our practices to reflect the changing environmental conditions in our forests. Anchor Forest practices apply innovative science to address the current trends in climate change and wildfire. When we lack the resources to fight fire in the initial attack status, then we lose the ability to prevent the exponential increase in damage from wildfire.

The value of proactive forest management ensures not only the health of our traditional territory but reserves private and public land as well. We need to prepare and adjust and to the challenges that climate change brings us - this is the cornerstone of sustainable forest management.

  4. It is time to further public policy that enables an innovative, culturally based, historically proven method of forest management. Sustainability in forest policy and economics are not mutually exclusive principles. Good stewardship allows us to work at managing a forest to ensure a healthy landscape, while still providing for the needs of the people.

Anchor Forests are acres of forest lands that are managed for forest health and timber production over multiple landscapes. The revenue generated and the reduced costs for risk mitigation, gives us the ability to manage a natural, renewable resource in an increasingly holistic manner.
