Live demonstration at the New Frontiers 2011 meeting in San Francisco. Dr Binmoeller demonstrates EUS-guided treatment of a giant gastric varix using a "forward-view" echoendoscope. After puncturing the varix under ultrasound guidance, a 15mm coil is deployed inside the varix, followed by 1 ml of cyanoacrylate glue (Octyl-2-cyanoacrylate). The synthetic "wool" fibers of the coil bind and retain the glue in the varix, which promotes varix obliteration, but also reduces the risk of systemic glue embolization. This demonstration illustrates the value of EUS to optimize endoscopic treatment of gastric varices. Reference: Gastrointest Endosc 2011;74:1019-25
