1. I was invited by my friends at Tendril to co-direct and design the animations for a series of seven spots for U.S. Cellular. This extensive campaign was developed in two phases during late 2011 and early 2012 in Toronto.
    The idea behind the spots was to capture a series of 'testimonial' style moments and then spice them up with playful animated elements. In some cases the animated elements correspond directly to what is being said, and in others they more generally underline the benefits of USCellular's rewards program.
    We had a lot of fun exploring different possibilities for each spot and tried to give each a different flavour. Although all the animated elements are CG, we wanted them to have hand-made charm. We eventually got what we wanted by establishing a palette that consisted of everyday materials like cardboard, construction paper, balsa wood, balloons, plasticine, string, and wire. On the animation end, we created stop-motion feeling for some shots by animating on two's and in a few places creating and swapping unique 3D geometry for each frame of animation—a kind of 3D simulated claymation.

  2. We were charged with the concept of bringing a community to life through the visual works of one muralist. After collaborating on the storytelling abilities within a 30 second time frame, we decided we would shoot all the live action plates and paint the entire contents of the mural frame by frame. 15 days, 250 paintings, and 25 coffee runs later, we had a living mural.

  4. Jose gets "smart" with this five-spot campaign for BBDO Berlin. For our very first co-production with our friends at Film Deluxe, we are very proud to showcase the work of Shilo co-founder and director Jose Gomez for BBDO Berlin and the phenomenal smart vehicles from Daimler AG. Over the past several months, Jose has directed five spots for the smart campaign. The "A Big Idea" campaign ads from BBDO Berlin creative director Ton Hollander and his colleagues focus on the new smart fortwo vehicle that recently arrived at smart center dealerships worldwide. Each spot presents an important quandary many people face, and uses clever copy to position the smart fortwo as the ideal solution. To interest a wide range of viewers within the narratives, the spots' simple style features engaging animated characters coming to life on live-action city walls. At the end of each one, the location-based stop-motion background cinematography finds a smart fortwo.

  5. I Dreamt of Flying 'I Dreamt of Flying' is a mixed media documentary, combining hand-drawn illustration with archive material. The piece focuses on the crews of Bomber Command who sacrificed their lives in the skies to help end World War II, and illustrates the distinct contrasts between the heroic and romanticised perceptions of the R.A.F, and the brutal and terrifying realities so many young airmen faced night after night. The film is a tribute to those men who risked their lives and to my grandfather; an RAF tail-gunner 1943-44.
