Astral's "In Focus" Interview Series

Best known as the screenwriter of the original cult horror film GINGER SNAPS (2000), Karen
Walton is a multiple award-winning screen and television writer whose dramatic series credits
include FLASHPOINT, THE LISTENER, QUEER AS FOLK, THE ELEVENTH HOUR, and she
won a Gemini Award for her teleplay for the true-story MOW, THE MANY TRIALS OF ONE
JANE DOE. She also Executive Produced the debut season of Canada’s first web series
mystery for Tweens, RUBY SKYE P.I. A graduate of The Canadian Film Centre’s Feature Film
Writers program, her diverse and unique work has been recognized with a Canadian Comedy
Award for Pretty Funny Screenplay, a special citation from the Toronto International Film
Festival for the GINGER SNAPS screenplay, the CTV Banff International Television Festival
Fellowship Alumni Award, the Sondra Kelly Memorial Award, and the Writers Guild of Canadaʼs
Writers Block Award for out-standing service to the Canadian screenwriting community at large.
An avid activist for creative citizenship and community-building, Karen founded the online social
community inkcanada - Canadian screenwriters & their sketchy friends in 2007. In addition to
ORPHAN BLACK, Karen is currently penning the first feature film adaptation of Ian Hamilton’s
celebrated Ava Lee Mystery novels: The Water Rat of Wanchai.
