1. Greg Deering is as large in real life as his banjos are in the marketplace. Deering Banjo Company is the biggest and most sophisticated of the 25 Banjo Builders interviewed in this Series. To say their factory was impressive is an understatement.

Greg is an artist, a craftsman and an inventive machinery design engineer. You can see his touch everywhere in Deering's 18,000 square foot factory (with 35 employees!). They're cranking out banjos in a frenzy... trying to meet the demand for the products they've created (i.e. the Goodtime).

Don't miss this soft-spoken man's personal story. It never ceases to amaze me... how fellow musicians join together, then split apart as each continues to grow.

The Deering story would make for a great Hollywood script.

Filmed entirely on location by Craig Evans, there are four volumes in the DVD Series: Banjo Builders East of the Mississippi (Volume 1), Banjo Builders West of the Mississippi (Volume 2), Conversations with Banjo Historians (Volume 3) and More Conversations with North American Banjo Builders (Volume 4). 2. I've always admired Bob Flesher's music. There's a lively, contagious joy in it. His style delivers excitement. I've felt the same way about his banjos. They're bold, stylistic... and punchy! Then I met Bob in person. Now it all makes sense. :)

Bob is a bundle of energy. And he's as creative as he is gregarious! But you better be ready to take a drink from a fire hose if you're ever fortunate enough to have a sit down chat. Be ready to laugh, too. The guy has got a million stories. I wish I coulda gotten more of 'em about his engraving and inlay work. The guy IS a master! We just kinda got carried away. You'll see.

Oh! And I'm sure he's the only Banjo Builder that ever appeared on the Andy Williams Show.

  3. Here is yet another one-and-only... lots of 'em in the category of banjo builders. Doc (Patrick) Huff is genuinely unique. A physician that is now building banjos MUST be driven by something different than most folks. Doc is.

That's good news for us that get to enjoy his instruments. Folks will be talking about (and treasuring) them for generations to come.

  4. Here's my conversation with the one and only Brooks Masten. He's funny, he's talented, he's a genuinely sensitive human being that just happens to build great banjos!

Of all the banjo builders, this life style fits Brooks the best.

  5. Meet Jason Mogi (and Kim Trenerry) of Port Angeles, WA.

As a musician, Jason was first drawn to traditional Americana music through Jerry Garcia's bluegrass banjo. Now he's becoming recognized as a first-class builder of open-backs.

Jason's banjos are simple, dynamic and powerful... like his music with Deadwood Revival.
