BASEMENT TV - Experimental

  1. In the 1920s, a group of surrealists invented a parlour game. Writing a word on a sheet, folding it and passing it on to the next person was the rule. The group created the sentence "The exquisite corpse will drink the new wine."

We've evolved this concept for the new media age. Basement Arts collective got together some of Toronto's cutting edge artists, designers and video artists to work on a one minute piece of video starting off with only one frame from the previous person's output.

The goal is to have a seamless and unified piece that is also eclectic, absurd and disparate. It is a collaborative process taping into a collective consciousness. It's also really f--king cool.

This song was chosen for me by Jay Wolting. I had never heard this song nor had I heard of the group, Need New Body, although I agree with the sentiment. The first thing that popped into my head when I heard it was 'mad scientist' and I started to get some images of the typical Frankenstien's lab. Then the idea of using my older son, Ishmael as the 'mad scientist' occurred to me. Having a son who looks a lot like you gives you an instant special effect and I was excited to see the transformation from me to him. The whole thing came full circle when I realized this could be a pastiche of childhood 'play acting' by using Ishmael's friends from down the street, Katie and Alex Mills. Especially meaningful to me because they've been friends since they were very little. Throw in some dry ice and you've got a fun way to spend a friday night at home!!
