Music is feeling and passion – and the young musicians from Azuleo mix these properties with the fresh air of the four cardinal points. Their musical background has flamenco and jazz influences, arabic sounds and spanish folklore. Romanticism, tradition and innovation: this international ensemble shines with his own light, given by virtuous guitar, full expressive singing, amazing saxophone sounds, electrifying bass lines and temperamental percussion beats.

I got to know Abel Sanchez and Jonas Ferhenberg two years ago when I filmed them in a small cafe in Berlin. They already worked on an impressive music based on Flamenco and adding on the talent of other musicians. Two years later, we got together again with this project, Azuleo. That night, we were supposed to film in an empty theatre which happened to so empty that we didn’t manage to reachthe owner on the phone! Long story short: we ended to film in my house in Kreuzberg which actually was the first time for me. I got the help of my old friend the musician Antoine Villoutreix who actually revealed himself great cameraman, especially being the first he was olding a camera!

It’s not the first time that I am filming at The New Standard Jam Session, and it won’t be hopefully the last time. There will be a serie of several videos dedicated to the Session. Look out for the new ones, exciting one are on the way…

THE NEW STANDARD JAM SESSION was created by Florent Chaintiou for about 7 years at the Oxident Bar, a Jazz club located in Friedrichshain. It soon became an attractive place for Musicians and Jazz lovers in town, apart from being a familiar place to meet, importance was made to the quality of the music and the openness toward all kind of music style connected to Jazz. In 2009 the session moved to the Theater Kapelle, a nice small church in the heart of Friedrichshain with a great atmosphere and acoustic. Some neighbours didn’t enjoy it that much and the Jam had to find a new place again. Since 2010 the Session takes place in DAS EDELWEISS Görlitzerstr.1-3. A nice and cosy Bar, Restaurant in Görlitzer Park in Kreuzberg, in the last remaining building of the old train station. It has a nice Lounge on the first floor for the Live Sessions, a cosy winter garden with fine Jazz, swing Dj’s and this is where it happens, every Tuesday night from 10pm to 4am.

The idea of the New Standard Jam Session is to bring the jazz musicians of Berlin together and spread this ever living music to the listeners. Of course it is also a place for all musicians passing by Berlin to enjoy local musicians. In fact the different nationalities of the musicians present on stage shows the amazing cosmopolitanity of Berlin which makes an ever more colourful picture of the city. The Session is based on improvisation around Standards well or not so well known and is every time influenced by the musicians present that night. All forms of Jazz are here represented latin, swing, afro, modern, blues, soul, bebop… always new, surprising and sometimes magic. The master of ceremony is the great pianist LIONEL HAAS, he’s the mister swing who can play faster than his shadow. Opener and artistic director of the session, he’s having on his side on drums RICO MCCLAREN he carries the roots of jazz and is a born bluesman, and the bassist DARYL TAYLOR the king of time and has a little aim for afrojazz.
